What are Internships? How Can I Find One?

Back to FAQ

Depending on your college or department, internships can be defined many different ways.

Internships are typically defined as a career–related experience for one semester or summer term. Internships may be paid or unpaid. Some departments will give credit to students for internship experiences. Some departments require one or more internship experiences as part of the degree requirements.

Internships are a great way to gain career-related experience, explore your career opportunities and get experience on your resume.

Don’t wait until April or May to find an internship. Start looking this fall at Fall Career Days.

Start in your college or department. If your college or department offers an internship program (for example: the Smeal College of Business), then use that internship program as a key resource. If there is not an internship program, see if there are any job posting books or boards or faculty members who may be able to assist you by

If the college or department does not offer assistance, Career Services (located in the Bank of America Career Services Center - across from the outdoor pool on Bigler Rd.) offers many resources available for your internship search needs. You may drop in without an appointment to chat with a counselor for ideas.

The web is an excellent resource for internship information. There are many job search engines, some focusing strictly on internships. You may also go directly to company home pages, as many post employee needs on their site. Start at the Career Services home page at http://studentaffairs.psu.edu/career, and from there you can find links for job search engines and to employer home pages.

Remember that you will need to get a strong resume and cover letter together and hone your interview skills. Take advantage of the workshops and resume reviews available in advance of Fall Career Days to get prepared for your search.
